Introduction

September 1939. After the annexation of Austria, Hitler decided to invade Poland. However this time, the European nations couldn’t act as if nothing had happened, so France and Great Britain declared war to the Germans. The French and British armies were staying on their frontiers, while the Germans defeated the Polish army, invade Denmark, using the tehnique of Blitzkrieg, and because of the non-aggression pact, They are not attacked by Russians. In 1940, the German army invades the neutral countries of Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg, and comes into France through the Ardennes, where no one expects it. The French and British armies are quickly surrounded near Dunkirk, where many soldiers are made prisoners. At that time, in July 1940, the United Kingdom was alone against the victorious German army. After the failure of the discussions about peace, begun by Hitler, the Germans plan to invade Great Britain. To achieve this invasion, they needed to control the sky. That’s why Hitler engaged the Luftwaffe in a battle against the Royal Air Force, to annihilate it. This was the beginning of the Battle of Britain.

What were the plans of each side? What were the main phases of the battle?

How did the British army manage to resist the power of the German aviation?

What were the consequences of this battle and how did it modify the course of the war? That is what we are going to explain in this file.
